About Fish Tank Lighting Many people who’ve never owned an aquarium may not realize that lights are absolutely vital to the survival and well being of your fish. They’re not just there so that you can see your fish more easily, and they’re not just there to make the tank look more attractive. The sun provides a set amount of light for about 12 hours a day, and most organisms have some sort of dependence on that cycle. Fish are no exception and this presents a problem for those who want to own an aquarium. Inside your home, an aquarium doesn’t receive enough light during the day to equal natural levels, and fish tank lights were created to solve this problem. The lights are usually set up on a strict timer for 12 hours so that they can mimic a typical day. The kind of light you need is going to vary quite a bit depending on what sorts of life forms you’re trying to keep in your aquarium. Regular fluorescent lights works great for fish because they don’t heat up your water, and they provide a spectrum that is more natural than candescent lighting. For plants, you need something a little more elaborate like a tri-phosphorous tube or a full spectrum fluorescent tube. Both of these are much closer to the natural spectrum, and because of photosynthesis, spectrum can be vital to the survival of marine plant life. Before you buy your tank, make sure you do enough research into the lighting needs of all the plants and fish you plan to include in the environment. Remember that providing appropriate light is almost as important for your fish and marine plants as providing food and clean water. |
